Singer/songwriter Marissa Nadler’s latest album, July, has been released on the Bella Union and her haunting take on folk is what Lana Del Rey should have sounded like when I first heard of her.
The lovely drivesets up a truly mesmerising record that is full of harmonious tones while managing to add a great sense of eeriness. It’s on songs like We Are Coming Back that Nadler’s superb voice really takes over and really sums up what July is all about.
Although a lot of the songs are led by an acoustic guitar, it’s on tunes like I’ve Got Your Name, which subtly adds a piano to it and Desirewith its brilliant yet understated synths, which really give off a harrowing feel. July is full of Nadler’s gorgeous songs and voice, which is encapsulated by the fantastic Nothing In My Heart which wraps things up superbly.
