Singer/songwriter Karl Smith has been a part of twelve albums as part of various bands, but Kitesis his debut solo outing and it does not disappoint. The album is to be released by the Fortuna Pop label and is something else for Smith to hang his hat on after previous bands such as Sodastream had received critical acclaim in the past.
Opening track After Mr Morrison starts off with some slightly morose tones before developing into a bouncy synth led number. Little Lucy continues the uplifting feel to this record and its guitar driven sound can do nothing but put a smile on your face. Lead single I Want You is a quirky love song featuring synths that make it sound like it could have been made inside of an eighties style computer.
Crotchets is definitely a highlight of the album and it combines an odd jaunty fairground beat with some excellent heartfelt vocals, which make for a fantastic tune. The brilliant I Know Julia slows the pace down a bit as does Slow Short Story which has a pretty self-explanatory title. Voices provides a brief instrumental interlude, before the beautiful Everything ends a great record from the hugely talented Karl Smith.
