Brighton’s Soft Arrows follow up last year’s superb All Through the Sinew with their brilliant second album, released on Edils Recordings, Overlapping Lives.
Whilst carrying on the shoegaze sound that Soft Arrows had before this record also see them add an edgier sound which is a really good development for them. Opening track Figure 8 really emphasises the heavier sound the band have got while managing to retain plenty of melody to their tunes. Scavenger Birds is one of the heavier moments and is a real highlight while Diving Rod is a more relaxed tune that moves along really nicely. As the record progresses the shoegaze side to Soft Arrows really comes to the forefront of which Bat Signal is a particular joy. Skin Cycle has a punk rock feel to it before a great record ends with the brilliant Flightless Birds a slow burner which develops into something fascinating featuring menacing riffs and vocals.
